A security firm has launched a free Martyn's Law self-check tool — here's how to think about it

Security Journal UK reports that Carlisle Support Services, a private security firm, has launched a free self-assessment tool for Martyn's Law. The idea is to let venue operators run through a set of questions and get a sense of where they stand on preparing for the new duties. It is a commercial product, not an official government or regulator tool.

As the expected spring 2027 commencement gets closer, more organisations are offering readiness tools, checklists and self-assessments. That is generally helpful — working through structured questions can prompt useful conversations about your premises, your headcount and your plans. But no private tool is endorsed, approved or certified by the Home Office or the SIA, and none can confirm that you meet the law. The SIA is the regulator, and its notification process is not yet live.

Martyn's Law will apply to premises where 200 or more people may reasonably be expected at the same time. Standard tier covers 200 to 799; enhanced tier covers 800 or more. Your count includes staff, not just customers or congregation. Knowing which tier you are likely to fall into is a sensible first step whatever tool you use.

Feel free to try free self-assessments to get familiar with the topics, but treat their results as a prompt for discussion rather than a verdict on your compliance. The duties are not in force yet, so there is time to prepare calmly. Focus on the basics: work out your likely tier, note who is responsible, and keep an eye out for official SIA guidance as it appears.
