Law firm looks at what Martyn's Law means for sports clubs and stadiums

The law firm Farrer & Co has published an analysis looking at Martyn's Law from the point of view of UK sports organisations. It considers how the new rules are likely to apply to sports venues of different sizes as they start to plan ahead. This is commentary from a legal firm, not new official guidance from government or the regulator.

Sports settings often bring large numbers of people together, from major stadiums to community grounds, clubhouses and event days. Under the Act, premises fall into the standard tier where 200 to 799 people may reasonably be expected at the same time, and the enhanced tier at 800 or more. Staff count towards that total, so it is worth thinking about your busiest realistic day.

If you run a sports ground, a club or host matches and events, this is a useful prompt to start familiarising yourself with the regime. Nothing is enforceable yet. The duties are expected to commence in spring 2027, and the exact date is still to be confirmed. The Security Industry Authority will be the regulator, and its notification process is not yet live.

Use this quieter period to get ready rather than to worry. Estimate the number of people who could be present at busy times, note which tier you are likely to sit in, and start thinking about simple procedures your team could follow.
