SIA Encourages Hospitality Venues to Start Preparing for Martyn's Law

Published

With a consultation now closed, the Security Industry Authority is reminding pubs, restaurants and other hospitality businesses to get familiar with their likely duties under Martyn's Law ahead of the rules taking effect.

What happened

Hospitality & Catering News reports that the Security Industry Authority (SIA) is urging hospitality businesses to begin preparing for the Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Act 2025, known as Martyn's Law, following the close of a related consultation. The SIA is the regulator named to oversee the new regime. Its notification process is not yet live, and the duties themselves are not yet in force.

What it means for venues

This is a prompt to familiarise yourself, not a sign that anything is enforceable today. Commencement of the duties is expected in spring 2027, with the exact date still to be confirmed. The message from the regulator is simply that early preparation will make the eventual changeover smoother for hospitality operators.

A reminder on the tiers

Premises where 200 to 799 people may reasonably be expected at the same time fall into the standard tier. Those expecting 800 or more sit in the enhanced tier. The count includes your staff, so it is worth thinking now about how many people your busiest moments draw in.

What to do now

Take a calm look at your typical and peak attendance to get a sense of which tier you may fall into. Keep an eye on SIA updates as the notification process and final timings are confirmed. There is no action required under the law yet, so use this period to build understanding rather than rush.
