SIA Sets Out How Martyn's Law Guidance and Setup Are Progressing

Published

The Security Industry Authority's lead for Martyn's Law has given an update on April's statutory guidance and the work to build the new regulator role ahead of the duties starting.

What happened

The SIA's Executive Director for Martyn's Law, Laura Gibb, has shared an update on GOV.UK about progress towards the new regime. It covers the statutory guidance published in April and the ongoing work to set up the SIA as the regulator. This is background information about how preparations are taking shape, not a change to the law itself.

What it means for venues

The Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Act 2025 became law in April 2025, but its duties are not yet in force. Commencement is expected in spring 2027, with the exact date still to be confirmed. The SIA's notification process is also not yet live. Updates like this show the framework and guidance are being built in the run-up to that point.

A reminder of the tiers

When the duties begin, premises where 200 to 799 people may reasonably be expected at the same time will fall into the standard tier. Those expecting 800 or more will fall into the enhanced tier. The count includes staff. It is worth knowing which tier your venue is likely to sit in.

What to do now

There is nothing to act on or notify today. Use this time to familiarise yourself with the published guidance and think about who reasonably attends your premises at busy times. Keep an eye on official SIA and GOV.UK updates so you are ready well before spring 2027.
